‘Ignoring Gravity’ by Sandra Danby: Book Review

Ignoring Gravity‘ is a debut book by Sandra Danby published by Beulah Press.

Ignoring Gravity’ follows the story of Rose who is confident about her identity. She pulls the same face as her grandfather when she has to do something she doesn’t want to do, she knows her DNA is the same as his. Except it isn’t: because Rose is adopted and doesn’t know it.

‘Ignoring Gravity’ connects two pairs of sisters separated by a generation of secrets. Finding her mother’s lost diaries, Rose begins to understand why she has always seemed the outsider in her family, why she feels so different from her sister Lily. Then just when she thinks there can’t be any more secrets…ig grav

I absolutely loved this book. I am usually very wary about reading books by new authors, especially ones which I haven’t read any reviews on previously, however I was pleasantly surprised with Sandra’s book.

From the very first page I was hooked. It started off exactly how you would expect it to – calm and simple – however, as the story unfolds we are introduced to a series of constant enigma’s.

We mainly follow the journey of Rose and Lily, and whilst we are searching for their unanswered questions to be resolved, we also learn a lot about their current life relationships with both people and work.

I disliked Lily’s husband from the very beginning and my hatred for him became more and more prominent as the book went on. Nick however, was a darling who I really loved – he was handsome, patient, loving and understanding. What more could you want in a man? Continue reading

Nadia Knows Best by Jill Mansell: Book Review

Stranded in a snow storm, Nadia has no choice but to share a room for the night with the gorgeous Jay, who she had just met. Despite being tempted, Nadia promised herself to stay faithful to her long-term partner, Laurie, who is her childhood sweetheart. Not long after this event, Laurie decides to break up with Nadia, and Nadia happens to bump into the handsome Jay again, who soon becomes her boss.

As the story unfolds, we meet Nadia’s family and get invited to experience the drama which comes with it. Nadia and Jay are becoming pretty close when Laurie decides to show up and declare that he made a stupid mistake and wants Nadia to take him back. However, who will Nadia choose? Her childhood sweetheart who she’d always imagined marrying, or her boss who gives her sparks every time he enters the room?isbn9780755332618-detail

This is the fourth book by Jill Mansell that I have read, and once again it didn’t disappoint me. This is a typical chick-lit book that leaves you wanting more and struggling to put down.

Throughout the book, there is a huge focus on Nadia’s family and their individual problems. I really liked this structure, because although the book centre’s around Nadia, it was really interesting to get to know the personalities and lives of those close to her which made it seem like I actually knew the members of her family myself. I really liked Nadia and I found her relationship with her family quite interesting.

I have a sister and we are quite close. We get on pretty well most of the time, and have never ever had a physical fight – well, from what I can remember! The thought of hitting my sister is absolutely absurd, therefore I found it slightly uncomfortable that Nadia hit Clare when she was being a pain. However, saying that, my sister is nothing like Clare. A lot of the time Clare deserved a smack to put her in her place because she was so selfish, rude and spiteful. Nadia was such a strong character which I loved – she stood up for herself and stood up for everyone around her who was having a difficult time too. Continue reading

‘Girl on the Run’ by Jane Costello: Book Review

28-year old, Abby Rogers, cannot think of anything worse than exercise and running. Other than managing her own web-design business, Abby enjoys spending her free time hanging out with her best friend (and fitness fanatic!) Jess, and chilling out eating junk food with a glass of wine. Jess is eager to help Abby find a man, and eventually encourages Abby to join the running club after telling her about the hot new team captain, Oliver.

However, Abby’s first session didn’t exactly go to plan and she vows herself to never return. Not long after this, colleague Heidi turns up at work and announces some devastating news which would change her life forever. But what Abby doesn’t realise, is how much her life was about to change too.{02763850-115C-4B6E-B134-574FBF4E0FD5}Img100

I absolutely adored this book. Right from the very first page, I was hooked and wanted to find out what was going to happen next. Not only does it involve Abby finding love, but it involves her finding new passions, hobbies and realising the satisfaction of helping other people.

I really liked how all of the characters were very realistic and true to people you would meet in every day life. There is always one person who hates sport, one person who loves sport, another person who is a bit of a player, another who has no control over their life and future due to uncontrollable circumstances…. the list is endless. Abby was pretty loveable herself – she wasn’t afraid to admit her dislike for excersise to those who loved it, which was pretty brave of her; yet she was also funny, confident and somebody you’d love to be friends with. ‘Billy and Me’ by Giovanna Fletcher: Book Review

This is the first book by Giovanna Fletcher I have read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Billy and Me follows the story of Sophie May – a girl who has always had big dreams of going to university and travelling the world, but has resorted in staying at home in her little village, living with her Mum and working in the local tea shop.

Sophie May lives a pretty ordinary life, but when Billy comes into the picture, she has no idea how much that is about to change. Billy is an actor who is currently working on a big movie which is being filmed in the town in which Sophie May lives. Sophie May has a secret which she has been hiding away for years, and Billy has big dreams to become a huge Hollywood success one day.billy_and_me_2

However, after he and Sophie May fall for one another, will Sophie May have the courage to step out of her ordinary life and into Billy’s world – a glamorous life constantly in the public eye? Will the constant attention from journalists uncover her big secret and leak it for the world to see?

Firstly, what a beautiful cover the book has. The silhouette of the town against the beautiful orange and yellow sky completely caught my attention straight away, as the colours really stood out and pulled me in. I had read so many positive reviews about this book, so I was really eager to give it a go.
